Abstract

The article justifies the topicality of the studies conducted on the utilization of post-consumer wood (PCW) in woodworking industry. It has been clearly demonstrated that recycled PCW can be an alternative additional resource for manufacturing wood products such as furniture panels, battenboards, particleboards as well as fuel pellets and briquettes. The study reveals a problem the point of which is the absence of resource-saving and environmentally benign technologies; also practical recommendations have been given as to the use of PCW in woodworking industry.

It has been suggested that the given problem could be solved in several steps: evaluation of the current state of the problem, its topicality, the objective and tasks of the studies; justification of PCW classification and estimation of its potential (available volume); development of the procedure for conducting experimental investigations; modeling technological processes; analysing results of the experimental investigations; development of technological processes and practical recommendations as to the PCW utilization; implementation of the investigation results into practice.

PCW has been identified in reference to wood species, component material type, contamination, foreign matter, and toxicity for the purpose of adequate sorting into categories.

A procedure has been developed for estimating PCW available volume and its balance according to the categories. The potential (available volume) for woody biomaas in Ukraine – wood waste and PCW – made up 6.438 million tonnes in 2012, including 2 million tonnes of PCW. Based on the cluster analysis, a monitoring of PCW was carried out for Ukraine’s regional centres. A system approach to PCW recycling was used. Two work-shops have been designed for sorting, segregating, cleaning and chipping PCW of various categories that is to be used for producing both bar and panel woodwork. Experimental investigations have been conducted on sorting, cleaning, and chipping PCW as well as studies have been done as to determination of dimensional-and-qualitative characteristics of chips and curved blanks obtained by conventional industrial methods. Technological capability of using PCW in woodworking production processes has been experimentally confirmed and commensurate product specimens were obtained: curved blanks, furniture panels, battenboards, particleboards, fuel pellets and briquettes. Basic physical and mechanical properties were determined for the products obtained by the developed production techniques. The patterns of PCW-content influence on physical-and-mechanical properties of the obtained products have been established. To introduce the investigation-obtained results into production process, a set of operating parameters has been proposed. Thus, on the ground of science-based approaches, namely, elucidation of feasibility and prospects for PCW utilization; estimation and prediction of PCW supplies; substantiation of means and techniques PCW recycling according to the types of products to be obtained; mathematical modeling methods; development mathematical models; cluster analysis; methods of analysis and synthesis; methods of cost-effectiveness estimation – resource-saving and environmentally benign technologies have been developed with practical recommendations regarding PCW utilization in woodworking industry.
