Abstract

The paper provides brief information about the forest windthrows in the Ukrainian Carpathians. The literature regarding the factors effecting the extent of windthrows was analysed. Also there was studied the influence of the stands composition, age, average height, average diameter, site class and stand density on the volume of windthrows. In general, the windthrows in the region under investigation have been of local nature and they damaged most of all the middle-density stands of spruce aged 71 to 90 years with the average height ranging from 26 to 30 m. Besides the methods of mitigating the wind-induced damage to forests in the Ukrainian Carpathians have been indicated.
