Abstract

An estimation of the energy potential has been made for woody biomass – wood waste and post-consumer wood (PCW) – which amounted to 6.438 million tonnes in 2012, the share of PCW being 2.0 million tonnes. It has been substantiated that these resources, when converted info solid fuel, could enhance the energy potential from 2.703 to 3.548 million tonnes of equivalent fuel, that is by 24%. Up-to-date production techniques have been developed and existing equipment has been improved to produce fuel pellets from PCW as being high energy capacity raw material. Operating conditions of the production process have been considered and the optimal pellet composition was determined with various contents of solid and soft PCW particles from broadleaved and coniferous species, particles from composite material, ect. based on their pressing capability. Also presented here are the results of comparative analysis of properties of fuel pellets with varied PCW content for the following parameters: moisture content, ash content, mechanical strength, wear resistance, calorific value, bulk density.
